Biography:

Gupta, an assistant Cooperative Extension specialist in the Department of Human Ecology, specializes in community food systems. Gupta completed her Ph.D. in environmental studies, policy and management at UC Berkeley. She did a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University before joining the UC Davis faculty in 2015.

Research interests:

Community resource planning and development, sustainable food systems, community food security, food politics, agro-food movements (e.g. local food, food sovereignty), building regional markets, farmworker and rural community wellbeing, urban agriculture, healthy families and communities.

Brief overview:

I examine how environmental and agricultural policies affect community food systems, and how citizens and community groups can shape these policies. Policies such as a water bond proposal, protections for farmworkers, or zoning restrictions on urban agriculture have an impact on community food systems, especially on small-scale producers.

Through research collaborations with fellow Cooperative Extension specialists, county advisors, academics, and community groups, I intend to provide data on the impact of these types of policies. These studies will help communities and policymakers implement data-driven public policy.

Current projects:

  • Evaluation of successful research-policy links within ANR-funded research projects
  • Proposed study of food policy councils in California (and their engagement with UC research resources)
  • Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of community-based fisheries policy in Hawaii
