Gerardo Mackenzie, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition, focuses on the role diet and other lifestyle factors play in cancer development and prevention. He completed his Ph.D. in cell biology from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina and taught at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in New York before joining the UC Davis faculty in 2016.

Cancer is a devastating disease, affecting millions of people and their families worldwide. I work to help develop more effective personalized approaches to prevent and treat cancer.
I focus on identifying the cellular and metabolic mechanisms involved in the link between obesity, inflammation, and cancer. I also explore how select dietary intervention can reduce inflammation and prevent certain cancers, such as pancreatic cancer. In addition, my laboratory explores important aspects of cancer biology and applies this knowledge towards the development of new preventive and therapeutic strategies.
