Visser, an assistant professor in the Department of Human Ecology, specializes in public policy and governance. She has a Ph.D. in public and urban policy from the New School for Social Research in New York, and joined UC Davis in 2012 from Hunter College.

Research interests:

Migrant labor, poverty, informal economy, low-wage labor markets, social and economic inequality.

Brief overview:

My research focuses on issues of social and economic inequality. Specifically, I am interested in understanding forms of social, economic, and political exclusion (such as poverty, citizenship status, race, class, and gender) that result in inequality and social stratification.

I am also interested in the capacity of government and civil society to address such inequality in the United States and in international contexts. My research seeks to inform the development of economic and social policy at all levels of government that support the inclusion of disenfranchised populations to promote equitable and sustainable development across societies.

Current projects:

  • Low-wage work in the United States
  • Employment and economic opportunity in the United States after the Great Recession
  • Disconnected youth
  • Migrant workers in the global informal economy
