Office Phone: 530-752-1437

Biography:

Sollmann, an assistant professor in the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology, focuses on quantitative wildlife biology. Sollmann completed her Ph.D. in biology at Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at North Carolina State University and the U.S. Forest Service before joining the UC Davis faculty in 2016.

Research interests:

Quantitative ecology, statistical modeling, noninvasive wildlife survey methods, population ecology, wildlife research, wildlife ecology and conservation

Brief overview:

To make informed decisions about wildlife management and conservation, society needs to understand how variation in habitat, climate, and other environmental factors influence wildlife populations, habitat use, and distribution of species and communities. We also need to know how human interaction impacts these processes.

I work to develop and apply models that accurately describe these important ecological systems, and disentangle true patterns from sampling error to make reliable inference. I focus on statistical models that address common issues in wildlife research such as sparse data or our imperfect ability to detect wildlife.

Current projects:

  • Studying the effect of large, high-severity wildfires on pollinators in the Sierra Nevada
  • Examining the response of wildlife to fuel-reduction treatments in the forests of the Sierra Nevada
  • Quantifying benefits of sustainable forest management for biodiversity conservation in Malaysian Borneo
