University of California Davis, department of Viticulture & Enology is seeking to fill a 100% time, Step 1 Junior Specialist. We’re seeking a plant scientist, horticulturalist, ecologist, environmental engineer, or other related background to join our research team studying drought stress physiology of grapevine rootstocks. Our team is working to more fully understand what limits the ability of a root system to deliver water to a canopy under drought stress. The McElrone lab is focused on developing sustainable water use strategies for woody crops in California. We ultimately aim to develop drought resistant rootstocks and irrigation management strategies tailored to the specific physiology of a given genotype. The successful candidate will participate in laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments designed to evaluate what contributes to hydraulic failure in grapevine root systems under drought and whether this response differs across genotypes. The successful candidate will be trained to use the following techniques to address our research questions: synchrotron-based micro computed tomography (i.e. a type of high resolution CAT scan); Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Neutron Radiography, fine root hydraulic measurements, and aquaporin gene expression. The Jr. Specialist will be instructed on how to use these techniques and a wide range of instrumentation, and candidates are not expected to have previous experience in the above techniques. A successful candidate will need to be able to learn quickly and work independently after initial training. The successful candidate must have an interest in participating as a team member in a multidisciplinary project and a willingness to travel to research sites (e.g. The Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) with other team members to perform overnight and several day experiments. The Jr. Specialist may engage in professional activities directly related to their professional expertise, and may engage in University and/or public service related to their professional expertise if allowed by their funding source.
