Participant Eligibility

May 31, 2013 Debra Cheung

In June 2008, the UC Davis CA&ES Dean's Office Policy Council decided that only individuals that are eligible to serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on Sponsored Research projects by virtue of their academic title are allowed to represent UC Davis CA&ES on national or regional activities such as Multistate Research Projects, National Research Support Projects, Committees, etc.  Please see UCD PPM 230-02.

Briefly, an individual must hold one of the following academic titles to be supported (approved and added) as a participant on national or regional activities through the CA&ES Dean’s Office:

  • Members of the Academic Senate, including emeriti, appointed at 50% or more of full time. (Prof., Assoc. Prof., Asst. Prof.)
  • Appointees in the Agronomist series, including emeriti, at 50% or more of full time. (“----- in the AES” appointees; Academic Federation)
  • Appointees in the Adjunct Professor series at 50% or more of full time. (Academic Federation)
  • Appointees in the Clinical Professor series at 50% or more of full time. (none in CA&ES; Med School only)
  • Appointees in the Professional Research series at 50% or more of full time. (Academic Federation)
  • Appointees in the Cooperative Extension Specialist series at 50% or more of full time. (Academic Federation)

Individuals with appointments such as Analyst, SRA, Associate in the AES, Project Scientist, Junior Specialist, Specialist, Specialist in the AES, etc., do not automatically have PI status.

The only exception to this policy is if an individual is currently acting as PI on a sponsored research project via an approved exception to policy.  A participant must hold PI status throughout the life of the national or regional activity.
