It's quite possible that Charlie Bamforth holds the most enviable title in academia.

Bamforth has served as the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Brewing Science at UC Davis for over a decade and a half. Dubbed by the media as the "Pope of Foam," the distinguished professor uses endowment funds to support student training in malting and brewing science.

"My research focus is on the quality of beer, including the role of beer as part of a wholesome and healthy lifestyle," Bamforth said. "In the past year we have, amongst other things, been looking at the detrimental role of manganese in the flavor stability of beer and on the impact of microbes on perceived hop-derived aroma."

Bamforth teaches three undergraduate classes - Intro to Beer and Brewing, Malting and Brewing Science, and Practical Malting and Brewing. His interactive classes are designed to teach students how to design and brew their own beers.

"The fund is of great value in support of my role as President of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, the international body dedicated to Education and Training of brewers and distillers. This is perhaps the most prestigious international appointment in the public brewing sector." Bamforth said. "It is an honor and a privilege and a title that I am so proud to carry."
