A Message from the Dean - January 2018

A fresh wave of students is setting sights on UC Davis

Come visit with our students at World Ag Expo in Tulare on February 13-15. This is last year's group of Aggie Ambassadors, who engage with the public and answer questions about UC Davis.
A new year is upon us and with it high school seniors and college transfer students throughout California and beyond are setting their sights on attending one of the best universities in the nation, UC Davis.

Recent statistics show that our campus attracted a record 95,207 applicants to study as freshman or transfer students in fall 2018. This is an increase of 7,550, or 8.6 percent, over last year. At the beginning of the current academic year, the campus as a whole enrolled 9,257 new students in fall 2017. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences enrolled 2,022 of these new students—1,142 freshmen and 880 transfer students. We anticipate a similar number for the upcoming academic year.

We expect many of the students who enroll at UC Davis to explore the 29 majors we offer in our college—everything from Agriculture to Human Ecology to Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology. Our top 10 largest majors are managerial economics, animal science, human development, environmental science and management, clinical nutrition, exploratory, animal biology, global disease biology, nutrition science and food science. Students can learn more about our majors through the “What Can I Do With My Major” blog, which connects the dots between our academics and practical career outcomes.

Our recruiters and advisors spend each fall and spring talking to prospective students from all over California, including at events like the World Ag Expo in Tulare, where an estimated 100,000 individuals from more than 50 countries will attend on February 13-15. The Expo is the largest annual agricultural show of its kind with 1,500 exhibitors displaying cutting-edge agricultural technology and equipment on 2.6 million square feet of show grounds.

Faculty, staff and current students from our college will be at the World Ag Expo to answer questions from prospective students and reconnect with alumni from the Central Valley and elsewhere. If you are attending, we encourage you to stop by for a visit and learn more about our top-ranked programs. We will be located in the World Ag Women’s Pavilion.

The new year looks bright for UC Davis and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and a big part of that is the character, curiosity, and drive of our students. Our dedicated staff and faculty continue to work hard at giving students the tools they need to succeed in life. We look forward to the coming months when we once again, accept a new cohort of engaged and passionate future leaders.
