A Message from the Dean - September 2017

Welcoming our new chancellor and inviting you to College Celebration

Soon our campus will be filled with bicycles ferrying a fresh crop of students, as well as staff and faculty, to begin a new academic year. We extend a hearty welcome to all, and offer a special greeting to our new Chancellor, Dr. Gary May.

Chancellor May officially started in his new role on August 1. He is an accomplished scholar and engineer who comes to us from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he had served on the faculty for nearly three decades, most recently as dean of the Institute’s College of Engineering.

He is an alumnus of UC Berkeley, where he earned his master’s and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. A dynamic leader with a passion for helping others succeed, Chancellor May is focused on advancing the mission of UC Davis in several areas, including:

• Achieving equal access to education and opportunity for students of all backgrounds
• Building diversity and nurturing success among students, faculty and staff
• Deepening the university’s engagement with Sacramento, Davis and the surrounding region
• Conducting research and outstanding scholarship in areas of critical need to California, the nation and the world.

His goals are very much in alignment with the strategic mission of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. We share a dedication to solving critical issues with food, water, energy, climate change, conservation, and human health to improve quality of life throughout society.

Every fall, we celebrate the achievements of our college with a bountiful harvest celebration, and I encourage you to join us at our annual College Celebration on October 6. Chancellor May will be in attendance to help us acknowledge our accomplishments and the people who help make our college a world leader in so many areas. Starting at 5:30 p.m., we will honor eight people with an Award of Distinction, the highest recognition given by our college to alumni, friends, faculty and staff. The 2017 recipients are:

Following the awards ceremony, we’ll enjoy great food, libation, conversation and camaraderie. At the end of the evening, everyone is invited to take home a bag of California agricultural products from our Farmers Market display. These California classics—fruits, nuts, vegetables, grains, and other items—have been donated by our generous friends in the agricultural community.

To learn more and register, please visit the College Celebration website. I hope to see you there!
