Pam Ronald Returns to Sweden for Honorary Doctorate

Pam Ronald, a distinguished professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, has a vivid memory from the day she arrived in Sweden in 1984 to begin a year as a Fulbright Scholar at Uppsala University.

“I was a young student who had just landed at the Stockholm airport, wondering how I was going to recognize my host, Professor Nils Fries,” Ronald said. “My anxiety vanished when I saw a kind-looking man waving a stick with a Boletus edulis stuck on the end of it.”

Honors and accomplishments for CA&ES faculty, staff and students Mench named honorary fellow of International Society for Applied Ethology 

Joy Mench, professor emeritus in the Department of Animal Science, has been named an honorary fellow of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE). She is only the third fellow named from the United States in the ISAE’s 52-year history. 

The “Pope of Foam” receives accolades from three brewing industry organizations

Charlie Bamforth—the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences at UC Davis—is a legend in the world of fermented beverages. Many of the brew masters leading the renaissance in beer making today studied under his tutelage.

Three of the brewing industry’s professional organizations this year have or will be honoring the “Pope of Foam” with awards that speak to a lifetime of accomplishments.

Devin Rippner is the 2018 recipient of the Neal Van Alfen and James MacDonald Graduate Student Support Fund Award for his research and leadership on the environmental fate of metals and metal oxide nanoparticles in soil and water.

Ellie Yin receives award for doctoral research examining probiotics and health

Xiaochen (Ellie) Yin, who recently completed her Ph.D. in food science, has been awarded the John E. Kinsella Memorial Prize for outstanding research on her doctoral dissertation examining probiotics and health.

Interest in probiotics has grown significantly with consumers in recent years and is now a leading sector of the food supplement market. However, probiotics research is still in its early stages—with promising but sometimes inconsistent outcomes regarding beneficial effects.

Frank Zalom receives lifetime achievement award for IPM work

Frank Zalom, a distinguished entomology professor and Cooperative Extension specialist, received a lifetime achievement award for his work in integrated pest management (IPM) at the Ninth International IPM Symposium held in March in Baltimore.

UC Davis entomology professor Frank Zalom receives national award  

Frank Zalom, an integrated pest management (IPM) specialist and distinguished professor of entomology, is the recipient of the 2017 B.Y. Morrison Medal, established in 1968 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS). He is the first entomologist to receive the award.
